Surprisingly, I beat a few bosses my first try on each, and have in fact died more fighting normal enemies in my most recent hour with the game, particularly the foes that appear, crawl down from columns, and can maul my character. I have the black monoliths activated so they shoot me to ceilings upside-down, and skill-wise, I'm aiming to get enough endurance and the skill to one-hand a hammer weapon I've gotten.
I finally completed the Dakota Vein and got a new machine gun from the chest in the last room, and I'll see if there's anything extra I can do before returning to the main quest.
